Position Overview

KIPP Bay Area Public Schools is seeking an experienced Mental Health Counselor to support the development & program management of our therapeutic day treatment program.  In this position, you will provide an array of therapeutic services to youth in a school-based setting. The Mental Health Counselor will work closely with the school team to meet the needs of students whose emotional regulation challenges impede their participation in the general education setting. The ideal candidate cares deeply about adolescents, especially those who have experienced a significant trauma in their lives.

Under the supervision of the Special Education Leadership Team and School Leadership team, and with support from the Mental Health Services Manager, the Mental Health Counselor will provide psychotherapeutic interventions, behavioral supports, and mental health treatment services including counseling, consultation, treatment and case management for students participating in the school-based day treatment program.

Roles and Responsibilities:

Mental Health Services

  • Create and implement therapeutic interventions for the purposes of fostering better mental health and positive learning environments for students.
  • Provide culturally appropriate and sensitive mental health services in the forms of individual, group, and family treatment, therapeutic case management, crisis intervention, and consultation services for all students eligible for the school-based day treatment program and in accordance with the student’s IEP.
  • Provide students with guidance and support through individual, family, and group therapies.
  • Provide process and skill-building group therapy to students in conjunction with other program staff (i.e. Education Specialist, Paraeducator, School Psychologist, School Counselor).
  • Assist students in developing self-knowledge and interpersonal skills, while keeping them in the least restrictive environment.  
  • Provide strategies for symptom reduction, increasing adaptive behaviors, and reducing subjective distress.
  • Provide crisis intervention, assessments, and triage of students.

Case Coordination

  • Work collaboratively with the student's multidisciplinary treatment team to develop daily programming and interventions, that will meet each client's educational, mental health and behavioral needs.
  • Develop and implement behavior support plans so students can access all aspects of their school day in the least restrictive environment.  
  • Assess and evaluate students in conjunction with other staff at regular intervals via direct observations, interviews, and other data collection methods.
  • Determine IEP goals and services for students qualifying for ERMHS and monitor student progress toward IEP goal attainment using special education database system (SEIS).
  • Participate as a member of the individualized education program (IEP) team.
  • Provide case management services as well as make necessary referrals to other community and residential agencies to support continued treatment and discharge planning.
  • Develop and maintain appropriate administrative and treatment records related to client care in accordance with standards and policies specified by KIPP Bay Area Public Schools.

School Team, Parents and Community

  • Consult with Grade Level Teachers and Chairs individually and during group meetings to assist with the development of intervention and care plans for students in the school-based day treatment program.
  • Provide clinical support, training, and supervision for staff working in the school-based day treatment program.
  • Teach, model, and reinforce constructive interactions between students and staff
  • Provide clinical consultation to others in the school environment to enhance educational outcomes for the students.
  • Provide consultation with parents, teachers, and other appropriate staff regarding the student’s program and any adaptations/materials needed to facilitate improved performance in the classroom or at home.
  • Establish, maintain contact with, and assist in collaboration with local community-based social service agencies in order to refer students and families for further services in conjunction with therapy.

Professional Practice

  • Adhere to the ethical standards and codes of the profession and to the established rules, regulations, and laws governing special education programs.
  • Adhere to IDEA timelines and to schedules, policies, and procedures as determined by KIPP Bay Area Public Schools.
  • Maintain relationships and effectively communicate with school leaders, teachers, and parents in all facets of the position.  Attend and participate in a variety of meetings, conferences and workshops, including, but not limited to, IEP and SELPA meetings.
  • Practice professional renewal through a variety of means such as attending conferences, workshops, and seminars and through participation in professional growth opportunities provided by KIPP Bay Area.

Perform other duties as assigned (not to include non-counseling or other duties that could compromise potential counseling relationships).

Minimum Required Educational Level & Experience:

  • Master’s Degree in Psychology, Social Work, Counseling, Marriage and Family Therapy, or a related field.  PPS Credential in School Counseling or School Psychology preferred.
  • Clinical licensure in the State of California (MFT, LCSW, PPS, Educational Psychologist, School Psychologist, Licensed Psychologist, LPCC) as dictated by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences or the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing.
  • At least one year of experience (2+ years preferred) providing mental health services in school-based settings.
  • At least one year (2+ years preferred) of experience providing mental health services in a community mental health setting.
  • Preferred: Experience in a day treatment setting or a residential setting.
  • Preferred: Ability to supervise other clinicians working towards clinical licensure (i.e. 2+ years of being licensed).

Other Requirements:

  • Familiarity with special education, IEP team participation, and educationally related mental health services and the delivery of such services, highly preferred.
  • Familiarity with local community resources/services (which may include health, mental health, substance abuse, vocational, housing, etc) highly preferred.
  • Strong commitment to the philosophy, goals, and mission of KIPP Bay Area Public Schools and to providing community-based, culturally competent, and client-centered mental health treatment and prevention services for the school community.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively, function independently, and interact professionally with a diverse, multicultural, and interdisciplinary staff of all levels.
  • Knowledge of crisis intervention, strong work ethic, demonstrated flexibility, superior time management, and boundary-holding skills.
  • Strong skills in self-advocacy as well as for the advocacy of students and families.
  • Commitment to systems change and social justice as well as to providing services with a trauma-informed care lens.
  • Familiarity with socio-emotional learning competencies and restorative practices a plus.
  • Able to maintain appropriate and compliant records.

  • Ability to travel within SF Bay Area with own transportation (mileage reimbursed).
