Job Description

Fort Worth Education Partnership is looking to hire a full-time Director of External Affairs who is personally and professionally committed to improving educational opportunities for all children.  The Director will lead the organization’s work to identify, engage and cultivate external partners, including both influential community stakeholders and grassroots community relationships, for the purpose of creating broad-based support and galvanizing advocatewho are committed to growing access to high-quality educational opportunities. This position will be based in Fort Worth, TX and is available immediately. Occasional travel required.

The Director of External Affairs will play a critical role at FWEP by leading our Advocacy and Community Engagement work to grow and maintain a supportive local environment and work with families and communities as partners. Our team is smallyou can expect to play many different roles in your capacity as Director 

Some Responsibilities will include:  

  • Working in partnership with the CEO to develop, monitor, and lead the organization’s advocacy and community engagement strategy and FWEP’s core external messages. 
  • Building, tracking and maintaining trusting and constructive relationships with key leaders, influencers and stakeholders to ensure consistently supportive local politics for FWEP’s strategic priorities. 
  • Creating and executing a strong, broad-based strategic engagement and public communications plan to build support for the organization’s key priorities and leading the organization’s communications strategy. 
  • Working with parents and families to build a broad, influential group of community voices to advocate for quality school options for all children.   
  • Designing and leading opportunities for parent leaders to learn the principles and practices of effective advocacy and community organizing.  
  • Generating opportunities for public engagement with local elections and candidates.  
  • Planning and organizing public events to increase knowledge of high-quality school options in Fort Worth and distributing information about school quality.  
  • Representing and supporting the organization in other advocacy and community engagement matters as identified and assigned by the CEO.   


The Director of External Affairs will be expected to be committed to the mission of the organization, that all children in the Fort Worth area have access to a high-quality public education, and supportive of FWEP's approach to accomplishing this vision, which is results-oriented and highly collaborative, working across broad range of institutions, interests, relationships, and political realities 

Specifically, we expect:  

  • Familiarity with Fort WorthCandidates should have a deep understanding of the Fort Worth community and the local policy and political landscape 
  • Mission Alignment: Candidates should have a personal commitment to providing quality education for all children 
  • Experience: Experience working in policy development and/or electoral politics  
  • Results: Demonstrated ability to exceed goals and a pragmatic, results focused orientation 
  • Communication: Ability to represent the organization effectively as a public spokesperson and produce high-quality written communication under tight deadlines, including memos, work plans, one-pagers, presentations, and briefs 
  • Strategic Vision and Project Management: Ability to think strategically, anticipate future consequences and trends, and incorporate them into a project plan to pursue clear goals 
  • Leadership and Organization: Capacity for managing and leading people; ability to connect with people both on an individual level and in large groups 
  • Analytic Skills: Knowledge and appreciation of business concepts, strong business writing skills, moderate to advanced Excel ability, moderate to advanced presentation software knowledge, effective communication skills with an ability to share and synthesize knowledge 
  • Strong Interpersonal Skills: Ability to find common ground with a variety of stakeholders and constituencies and motivate and influence them to take actions
