VISION FOR INSTRUCTIONAL COACHING AT KIPP DC:
At KIPP DC, we believe the quality of instruction defines the rate and quality of student achievement. Teaching and learning is at the core of everything we do. The role of an instructional coach is a position of leadership; the work is to support leaders and teachers in ensuring all students learn and achieve within classrooms that are intentional, rigorous, and joyful. The person in this position will demonstrate a relentless drive toward excellence and a commitment to ensuring that our instruction puts children on a successful path to and through college.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Drive an instructional vision focused on academic rigor, “work worth doing,” and building student autonomy
  • Develop and refine a Common Core State Standards aligned elementary scope and sequence, units, lessons and resources
  • Meet aggressive student and staff learning targets in literacy
  • Use teacher and student performance data to design, coordinate and facilitate professional development to increase teacher and leader expertise in all components of balanced literacy: Writing Workshop, Reading Workshop, close reading, read aloud, independent reading, shared reading, guided reading, phonics, and fluency
  • Provide support to school leaders on best practices and implementation of curriculum, pedagogy and data driven instruction
  • Use formative and summative assessment measures to ensure students are meeting proficiency standards and guideposts
  • Provide teachers and leaders with coaching, modeling, and co-observations to improve and refine teaching practice
  • Additional responsibilities may arise during the school year. This will be communicated with as much notice and flexibility as possible

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • At least four years of successful teaching experience, preferably in urban setting(s)
  • At least two years of successful coaching or leadership experience at the elementary level
  • A strong track record of positive student performance results in literacy, both in formative measures and high stakes exams
  • Experience writing rigorous unit and lesson plans
  • Expertise and results in balanced literacy and the pedagogy of Reading and Writing Workshop
  • Expertise and results in foundational literacy skills (i.e. print concepts, phonics, fluency, etc.)
    Experience administering and analyzing common leveled reading assessments (i.e. F&P, STEP)
  • Well-read and current on best practices in literacy
  • A strong track record of facilitating teachers and/or leaders toward instructional improvement
  • Experience designing leading compelling and useful professional development
  • Experience using multiple assessment measures and observational data to determine coaching and professional development necessary to improvement in teaching and student performance
  • Excellent written and oral communication
