Job Description

The KIPP Texas Manager of School Health Services will support schools to foster healthy and safe environments for students to reach optimum achievement and wellness, serving as a thought partner, problem solver, and change agent to internal and external stakeholders with steadfast commitment to action.

Position Overview
KIPP Texas Public Schools Student Support Services (S3) exists to prevent, respond to, and minimize the barriers to learning that KIPP students may experience. Since health and wellness and educational goals are interdependent, this position furthers the mission of KIPP Texas as it helps ensure that all students have access to care that meets their diverse emotional and behavioral needs. Reporting to the Director of School Health Services, the Manager of School Health Services is a member of the S3 School Health Services leadership team and will serve as an advisor for and implementer of policies and procedures. This position furthers the mission of KIPP Texas by promoting and protecting the optimal health status of KIPP students and faculty.

Duties and Responsibilities
Leadership
  • Serve as a leader in KTX for communicable disease reporting and control
  • Serve as a resource for regions regarding CPR/First Aid and AED certification courses for school-based teams on an annual basis
  • Support schools with UDCA training for campuses that have students with diabetes
  • Serve as a liaison for student individualized health plans and services provided to students with chronic illnesses across KTX
  • Participate, with members of the S3 team, in developing workshops for teachers and faculty on health-related topics
  • Implement School Health Services policies and procedures
  • Interpret health information, observations, and assessments of students to team and recommend/arrange further health services as needed

Supervision
  • Direct supervision of School Health Services staff
  • Provide and/or arrange in-service training needed by personnel, including orientation and professional development of school based health staff
  • Collaborate with other school personnel in evaluation and intervention of crisis situations such as child abuse and substance abuse
  • Delegates tasks to unlicensed personnel within scope of license
  • Promotes wellness education for various shareholders (students, families, faculty)

Compliance
  • Annual reporting of mandated school health screenings
  • Serve as a leader in KTX for communicable disease reporting and control
  • Participates in the surveillance and prevention of communicable diseases
  • Serves as a School Health representative on the KIPP Texas School Health Advisory Committee

Qualifications

Education and Knowledge
  • Diploma from an accredited school/college of nursing required, BSN preferred
  • Licensed Registered Nurse credentialed from the Texas Board of Nursing
  • CPR, First Aid, and AED Certification; also certified to train others in these areas
  • Screening certification in the following areas: Vision/Hearing; Acanthosis Nigricans; Scoliosis
  • Minimum of three years of experience in school nursing or related field
  • Knowledge of school health and school nursing practice
  • Understanding of child growth and development
  • Understanding of basic health care procedures
  • Excellent interpersonal skills; Experience collaborating with team members
  • Supervisory experience required
  • Articulate, professional demeanor with strong self-confidence and initiative
  • Ability to exercise excellent judgment in diagnosis and decision-making
  • Ability to be flexible and adapt to changing priorities
  • Proven written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Possession of a passionate and loving attitude toward all children
  • Responsiveness; Follow-up and follow-through with students, families, and school personnel is essential
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook)
  • Proficiency using computers, printers, copy machines, and fax machines

Preferred but not Required
  • Experience working with children with disabilities preferred
  • Bilingual Spanish/English
  • Qualified UDCA trainer
